SOME FOLKS ARE CELEBRATING SOMETHING TODAY

Federal offices and banking institutions are closed today in observance of Columbus Day, the day on which a sailor onboard the Pinta sighted land. The next day, Christopher Columbus' three ship entourage landed on the Bahamian island of Guanahani. State and local offices will be open, and schools will run on a normal schedule.

And our friends to the north in Canada are celebrating Thanksgiving Day today. It was set permanantly on the second Monday of October by proclamation in 1957, but Thanksgiving Day has been celebrated in Canada since 1872, when it was observed on April 15 to celebrate the recovery of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) from a serious illness.

Whatever you are celebrating, make it a great Monday!
