Pierre DuCharme / Lakeland Ledger
ENJOYING A SECOND CAREER, AND MORE...YOU CAN ONLY WATER SKI SO MUCH, YOU KNOW...

There's a great piece in today's Lakeland Ledger on the front page: It's "Monday Profile" features Polk County Democratic Party Chairman Richard Blank. He and his wife (and Polk Democratic State Committeewoman) Carroll Franklin came here several years ago from Miami to enjoy the good life of watersking and boating, but ended up becoming politically active and gaining a second career as a Assistant Public Defender for the 10th Judicial Circuit.

Richard and Carroll are great people, and they compliment each other well. He has worked hard at bringing the often competing interests of the local party organization together, and to date he has been rather successful. Richard is a man of few words, and I would best describe him with words from one of our favourite books, The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran:

Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your seafaring soul.

If either your sails or our rudder be broken, you can but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas.

For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction.

Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion; that it may sing;

And let it direct your passion with reason, that your passion may live through its own daily resurrection, and like the phoenix rise above its own ashes.

I have had the luxury of getting to know Richard and Carroll and they are both phenominal people. They are two of the most fair and caring people I have ever met. If there were more politicians that were motivated by what motivates Richard and Carroll this world would be a far better and much more trustworthy place.
