HOW EATING OUT BRINGS BACK OLD MEMORIES

The family ate out last evening at Lakeland's new Whataburger restaurant on U.S. 98 North. The place just opened up last week at a great location, next to a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Needless to say, it's going through "new restaurant syndrome", where the drive-thru lines are long and the inside was packed (at least when we went around 5:45 PM). Everyone wants to check out the new food joint.

Actually, Lakeland had a Whataburger previously, located a little over a mile south near Lakeland Square Mall, but had been closed for some time.

It was the first time in three decades I had been into a Whataburger restaurant. I discovered the brand when I lived in Pasadena, Texas, a suburb of Houston. It was a favourite eatery of mine then, and it seems like this crew in Lakeland is keeping up the good quality (although my son complained it seemed a little more expensive).

You're correct about the old Whatabuger on Memorial Blvd. near the old mall. Does any one remember the Whataburger on George Jenkins Blvd? Nobody in my family remembers the old Whataburgers in Florida, including my 88 year old grandmother. I guess they weren't a big hit back them, and maybe that's why they went out of business in Florida? I can't remember when the Whataburgers closed in Lakeland, but I think it was in the late 1970's or early eighties.
