A FREE PRESS HELPS TO MAINTAIN A FREE DEMOCRACY
HUGE kudos to Howard Troxler of the St. Petersburg Times, who focuses on a quote made by special federal prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald in his argument to have New York Times reporter Judith Miller jailed for refusing to identify who she spoke with regarding the story of a leak of the name of a CIA operative.
Fitzgerald said:
Journalists are not entitled to promise complete confidentiality - no one in America is.
If that attitude were to be allowed, we probably would never have learned much --- if anything --- about such things as Watergate and who knew what, as well as other misdeeds by government agencies and officials.
Check it out for yourself, as Howard makes some excellent points!
