IF YA WANNA TALK ABOUT A REAL BOOTY-THUMPIN'...

The in-town prep football rivalry between Lakeland High and George Jenkins was no match from the start. The Drednaughts of LHS, currently ranked third nationally by USA Today, defeated GJ 78-0 on Senior Night at Bryant Stadium.

The 'Naughts set team records for defensive touchdowns (5) and extra points (Matt Roddenberry made eight), while tying a school record in points scored. They also forced ten turnovers, including seven fumbles.

Jenkins is now winless after seven games. LHS remains undefeated after eight games, and now has an off week before travelling to Osceola October 27.

Meanwhile, signs are beginning to pop up with messages around Lakeland giving best wishes to the Detroit Tigers, who took a 3-1 lead over the Oakland Athletics last evening. The 'Cats, who have made Lakeland their spring home for more than half a century, can make a ALCS sweep and earn their spot in the World Series this afternoon with a victory behind the arm of probable starter Jeremy Bonderman. This young fellow looked remarkable in the performance I saw him in.
