PUTNAM KNOCKIN' ON THE DOOR OF GOP HOUSE LEADERSHIP

I noted hear nearly two weeks ago that Congressman Adam Putnam (R - Bartow) was seeking the chairmanship of the House Republican Policy Committee, and that his campaign for the number five spot in the GOP House leadership was gaining ground with a "Whip Team" of 17 collegues talkin' up his name.

Putnam, the second-youngest member of Congress at 31, got what he wanted Thursday. He will replace Rep. John Shadegg (R - AZ), an unsuccessful candidate for majority leader. But his victory over several opponents could be slightly diminished because Putnam, like much of Florida's congressional delegation, backed runner-up Roy Blunt (R - MO) in the race for House Majority Leader.

According to the St. Petersburg Times' political forum The Buzz, it appears that not one Florida representative cast their ballot with the winner, John A. Boehner (R - OH).

According to it's Web site, The Policy Committee is comprised of the elected and appointed Republican Leadership; the chairmen of five key committees (Appropriations, Budget, Commerce, Rules, and Ways and Means); Representatives elected from each of the Nation's regions; three Representatives elected by the two newest classes of Members; and at-large members appointed by the Speaker.

Mr. Putnam's selection to this major post will make it even more difficult --- but not impossible --- for any serious challenger to run against him now, or in the near future. When you're knockin' on the door of the majority party leadership, that usually means more perks and money for projects in your district. And the folks back home like the fact that their congressperson is becoming a major player in the nation's capitol. We'll have to wait and see if Mr. Putnam is ready for the job...
