WAS IT A GREAT SURPRISE?
While I was at work today, former Tallahassee mayor and Democratic Party chairman Scott Maddox gave up his ambition to be the next governor of Florida. In his announcement, Maddox threw his support to Tampa congressman Jim Davis.
It was not a big surprise, as Maddox had severely lagged in fundraising behind Davis and State Senator Rod Smith of Alachua. Part of that was due to his very late entry into the race; I'm sure a good part was because a number of people saw Maddox as damaged goods due to the heavy criticism received for financial controversies that occured during his watch as FDP chairman.
It was also not a huge surprise that Maddox would endorse Davis; he and Smith are not what you would call anywhere near cordial buddies.
There are some on the blogs that suggest that Smith drop out and seek the Attorney General's position. That's only wishful thinking for those folks. Sit back and relax...enjoy the primary races.

Hey there. I'm Billy Townsend, an editor at The Ledger. You've got a heck of a blog. You must be, without question, the best single reader we have. Keep it up. It makes us feel good to have someone pay attention to what we do.
Thanks, Billy. I appreciate the good words. The Ledger doesn't get the respect from a lot of folks that it deserves. Great job on a couple of stories this week, the continuing PCOC issue and the piece on Dewey Smith.
