BUILDING FLORIDA RIGHT INSTEAD OF CHEAP

Check out this great column by Mike Thomas that appeared in Sunday's Orlando Sentinel. When he says that "Our refusal to plan and pay for growth is becoming a crisis", it is sooooooo true.

Folks here in Polk County like Dewey Smith and Jack "Ax The Tax" Gargan should be required to read this. Just consider these facts from the Collins Center For Public Policy:

We rank last in the nation in per-student funding for college. We are near the bottom in funding for K-12 students. Between 1992 and 2002, Florida and Arkansas were the only states to reduce spending per student when taking inflation into account. We also are billions behind in building roads and other public improvements needed to handle growth.

And yet our governor and his ilk insist on tax cuts that mainly benefit the wealthy? We're at the point where we simply can't use the Vince Naimoli example.

Bottom line - you get what you pay for.

As a state, we don't INVEST enough in education, so we get a poor education system which results in an unskilled workforce which makes us less competitive in attracting Fortune 500 companies to our state which hurts economic development.

As a state, we don't INVEST enough in transportation, which results in increased traffic congestion which increases the delivery time of freight which makes products cost more which hurts economic development.

I could also give examples about our weak levels of INVESTMENT in healthcare, affordable housing, parks, and law enforcement. Low levels of investment result in low ROI.
