JUST ANOTHER DAY...ANOTHER BUMP IN THE ROAD FOR HARRIS' U.S. SENATE CAMPAIGN...MORE ILLEGAL CONTRIBUTIONS
Jeremy Wallace of the Sarasota Herald Tribune is reporting that the Federal Election Commission has flagged Congresswoman Katherine Harris (R - Longboat Key) and her U.S. Senate campaign, questioning $60,000 in campaign contributions over the legal limit.
In a 12-page letter to Harris' new campaign treasurer, Keith A. Davis, FEC officials list 45 donors who gave Harris more than $2,100 for her Sept. 5 primary contest against three other Republicans. Federal campaign laws prohibit individuals from giving more than $2,100 for any election.
In two of the cases cited by the FEC, Harris accepted donations just $1 over the legal limit. In another 16 cases, Harris collected exactly $2,100 over the limit. She took two donations of $6,300 each -- the largest donations she accepted from individuals -$4,200 above the maximum limit.
[FEC Campaign Finance Analyst Lauren] Lien wrote that the commission may take further legal action against the committee for violating the campaign limits, but will take into consideration prompt efforts to fix the situation.
Harris' campaign spokesperson Chris Ingram said they have received the letter and are researching it.
It could be simply a case of sloppy bookkeeping, a common issue in campaigns...and that could be especially a factor in Harris' campaign, where she has experienced a high turnover among her staff.
The limit on donations counts seperately for primary and general election races, so it could simply be a case of miscoding checks intended to be used for the general election.
Still, it's rather ironic that here is the former Florida Secretary of State, who in that position was in charge of the state's campaign finance rules --- who was twice singled out for accepting illegal campaign donations in previous races --- having to check her financial reports yet again. With this type of record, doesn't that tell you what kind of U.S. Senator she would be?????
