RANDOM POLL SHOWS MANY DO NOT BELIEVE IRAQ OCCUPATION WORTH U.S. LIVES

The Lakeland Ledger did a random, unscientific two day poll of approximately 30 people regarding the U.S. occupation of Iraq, and the results are about what one would expect at this point in time anywhere across America:

About half of those queried in a roving and unscientific two-day survey of Polk County residents said the American involvement in Iraq has not been worth the cost in lives and money, while a third said it has been worth it and the rest were ambivalent or undecided.

Of approximately 30 people interviewed, only two Democrats approved of the war and only one Republican disapproved, while half described themselves as independents.

In a similar number of interviews two years ago, county residents were evenly divided on whether the U.S. should remain in Iraq for an extended period.

One of the more interesting comments came from Nancy Williams, a 70-year-old retiree interviewed in Davenport:

"I think we need to get the hell out of there and come back home...I don't know what they're fighting for over there; do they know what they're fighting for? I'd like to send Mr. (George W.) Bush over on the front line."
