TODAY'S QUESTION: WHO'S ON BUSH'S SHORT LIST?
Of course, that short list is regarding to who would replace Associate Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The names most likely being touted:
Samuel A. Alito, Jr.: On the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
Edith Brown Clement: On the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
Emilio M. Garza: On the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
Alberto Gonzales: Attorney General of the United States
Edith Hollan Jones: On the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
J. Michael Luttig: On the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
Michael W. McConnell: On the Tenth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
John G. Roberts, Jr.: On the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia
J. Harvey Wilkinson, III: On the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
A couple of good sources about the potential candidates' records come from this AP story (thanks to Florida PolitiX) and this article from Slade.
Also a couple of interesting notes: There are some who are advocating the appointment of freshman U.S. Senator Mel Martinez to the High Court. That's quite doubtful, as the Prez needs all the help he can in the upper chamber. But also, the Miami Herald reports that the Cuban-American Bar Association is pushing for Florida Supreme Court Justice Raoul G. Cantero, III's nomination. The FSU and Harvard Law graduate became the first Hispanic to serve on the state's high court when Jeb! appointed him in 2002. The association plans to meet Tuesday to draft a letter of recommendation which would be sent to the President. Doubtful that would happen, either, as Cantero is only 45 and has no federal appeals experience.
