THE MAIN EVENT 2006: HARRIS -VS- NELSON

So, Congresswoman and former Florida Secretary of State Kathryn Harris has decided to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democrat Bill Nelson. No great surprise there. She had wanted to run against Bob Graham, but reportedly was asked to stay out of that fight by the White House because 1) she was still too much of a divisive figure after her dual role as Secretary of State and a co-campaign chair for the Bush team in Florida...especially on election night, and 2) to allow Bush's close friend Mel Martinez to run. There was no way Ms. Harris was about to step aside again.

A race against Nelson will certainly be one for the ages. While some traditional liberal Democrats have soured on Nelson recently for some of his positions, they will not dare abandon him for the "Queen of the Right Wing". And, of course, the evangalical preachers will try to tell their parishoners that Jesus would be for Katheryn Harris. The money will be flowing like the St. John's River reeeeeal soon!

The site Politics1.com says this will likely be one of the costliest, nastiest, and most competitive Senate races in the nation, and while most put this seat in the "Leans Dem" catagory it places this races in the "toss up" catagory. No early word on any possible candidates to run for her 13th district seat.
